So, this is my first project I did for the vector exercise. I had a monster stuck in my head for a while that I never really drew out and I couldn't get him out of my head so I decided to draw him out. I couldn't think of word to use in an abstract way so I just associated him with the word "creep". I didn't focus much on the word itself nor the abstract idea of "creep", but I just played around with Illustrator and I got a little carried away with the blob brush tool. I used the crystallize and wrinkle tool under warp to achieve the crumbled, broken look of the speech bubble and the word.
This is my second project for the vector exercise I did in a few minutes. I felt bad that my original project wasn't abstract-y so I attempted to do something of that manner. I used the word "nuh-uh" because I use this word a lot and it just appeals to me because it isn't an actual word :-P. I was really just experimenting and playing around with the warp and pencil tools. First I did a black and white layout and displayed the word with opposing colors, and then I messed around with the straight line between the black and white background. I then drew in what looks like hair, or string (I don't really know), and then warped it to make it look like sounds waves (?). I like the outcome, even though it isn't as abstract as I wanted it to be.
I can't think abstract!!!!!! arghhhh.

These are both excellent, but I absolutely adore the nuh-uh piece. It has a very cool feel, it's fantastic. ;D
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to agree with my student-nemesis (jk) Elisabeth here, and say that I really like both pieces. Thank you for sticking to the original exercise and playing just with the text and simple shapes. Love the stringy, wave feel to the 2nd composition.
ReplyDeleteHow did you actually do drawing in this program? I don't understand it. And I was really trying to do the wave/black and white/strung out effect in my work but didn't know how. Help?
ReplyDeleteThe nuh-hu piece is amazing! Feels like an underworld or roots to me. Very abstract, very appealing!
ReplyDeletethank you all :-]
ReplyDeleteInSTI3L14: I used the blob brush tool to draw.
I used it like I would Paint, except changing the point size and color quite a bit. I didn't change the style of the brush because certain styles only have one size brush which is HUGE. I also messed with the opacity.
Also, if you decide to use this tool, make sure you use layers!!
I was almost done, but I wanted to modify just the mouth, and I couldn't without affecting the teeth and other parts on top :-(
